Choosing the best sink for your kitchen remodel

Just like all other elements of your kitchen remodel, options on sinks are extremely plentiful. Before you go falling in love with what you think is the perfect sink and kitchen faucet, there are a few things you should know about materials, styles and options for kitchen sinks.

Drop-in vs. under-mounted

The sink pictured above is referred to as a drop-in sink. Drop-in sinks have a lip that borders the opening allowed for the sink in the countertop. While these particular sinks are a little easier to install during your kitchen remodel, the lip around the sink can be hard to clean even when sealed with caulk. An under-mounted sink has no lip. Instead, the countertop opening is made up of clean lines that frame the sink. Under-mounting is definitely something to consider if you are also replacing your countertops during your kitchen remodel. That way, the sink can be easily installed before a new countertop is selected for your kitchen design ideas.

Material choices

You may already know that stainless steel is the way to go if you are looking for a tough-as-nails sink that will last you through the years. If you need kitchen equipment that can take your abuse, stainless steel is an optimal choice for kitchen design ideas that last the test of time. However, quartz silicate and fireclay are other options that will also effectively resist scratching. While these are all great materials for your kitchen remodel, you may be looking for something with more color options. If that is the case, look no further than enameled cast iron which has a great selection of sparkling hues to choose from.

Other options

A common concern for kitchen design ideas is sink space. Sinks with deep-set basins are great if you regularly use large pots and pans that need to soak before washing. However, scrubbing at this sink for periods of time will require you to bend forward, which can do a number on your back. A corner kitchen faucet is a great way to create an interesting, asymmetrical look to your sink during a kitchen  remodel. There are also plenty of sinks with neat little add-ons such as strainers and cutting boards.
